Keys to Surviving Your Writing Intensive Curriculum Course

Writing Intensive Curriculum (WIC) course:

An upper division course that has been approved as meeting all WIC criteria specified by the OSU Faculty Senate. All students must take a WIC course in their major in order to graduate.

Based on the Faculty Senate criteria, WIC courses include:

  • Learning about the kinds of formal and informal writing done by professionals in your field of study.
  • Understanding the processes and conventions commonly used by writers in your field.
  • Writing at least 5,000 words; 2,000 will be in polished form (papers you've revised after receiving feedback from your peers and/or instructor).
  • Receiving an overall course grade of which at least 30% is based on your writing.
  • Writing informal assignments about what you're reading and discussing in class; also called "writing-to-learn."
  • Writing at least one paper using outside sources.
  • Participating in a small class—usually somewhere from 20 to 30 students.
